Let Fritillaria 'Red Beauty' fill your flowerbeds with spicy spring colour! There’s no doubt that crown imperials have a fearless enthusiasm, rocketing skywards in spring to form impressively large and exotic-looking plants with the minimum of fuss. Chunky, strong, purple stems are topped with a generous cluster of fiery red lamp-like pendulous blooms, on top of which is a fancy forelock of zesty green leaves. Fritillaria imperialis 'Red Beauty' is flamboyant, classy and fascinating—it’s amazing to think that a plant like this can burst out of one easy-to-grow bulb!
Whilst Fritillaria 'Red Beauty' does look a quite tropical, it is hardy and the bulbs will be perfectly fine tucked up in the soil outdoors over winter. Their outlandish appearance rarely fails to impress—flowering around March/April, Fritillaria imperialis are without a doubt among the most high-impact spring bulbs. Being tall, they’ll tower over surrounding tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, adding another dimension to your planting scheme.

Check whether your varieties prefer sun or shade, then choose a sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Most spring bulbs also grow well in containers.
Remove weeds and loosen compacted soil. Improve heavy ground with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost and ensure good drainage.
Plant at the depth recommended for each variety, as their requirements differ. Position shoots or pointed ends upwards. If the correct direction is unclear, plant them on their sides.
Follow the recommended spacing for each variety. Planting in clusters or informal drifts creates a natural display, but avoid placing them directly against one another.
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Keep containers lightly moist but never waterlogged. After flowering, allow foliage to yellow naturally before removing it.
