Description
Showcase a combination of grace and high drama by planting a patch of dreamily dark Centaurea 'Jordy'. With fine, shaggy petals in an alluring shade of deep purple, set against silvery-grey foliage, this modern bachelor's button or knapweed has a license to thrill! Even the patterned flower buds are pretty. Native to the mountain meadows and woodlands of continental Europe, nectar-rich Centaurea is loved by pollinators of all kinds, and the sensational Centaurea 'Jordy' is no exception—it’s a wildlife-garden beauty.
Find a spot for Centaurea montana 'Jordy' in a sunny or partially shaded part of the garden, in a moist but well-drained soil. Flowering in early summer, knapweed will respond well to a chop-back soon after flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms later in the season. Centaurea 'Jordy' is a hardy perennial that is very resilient and will grow back every year. Each year the clump will spread slightly, eventually providing you with rewardingly gorgeous swathes of early summer colour.
In the olden days, some men would place a Centaurea flower in one of their buttonholes before going courting, hence the nickname bachelor's button.

Useful information
-
Soak the Centaurea 'Jordy' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Bachelor's button" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
