Plant allium bulbs from September to December. If needed, keep them in their open packets somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated until planting.
If you love flowers that look like they just came to life from a Dr Seuss illustration or a science fiction story, Allium 'Hair' is for you! This “I can’t believe my eyes!” flower will draw you and your friends in for a closer look. What should you compare it to? Tentacled aliens? Cute critters with purple faces and unruly mops of green hair? And then there’s its undoubted and surprising allure. Despite bucking the system by looking very un-flowerlike, these blooms are really rather attractive.
Succumb to their whimsical charm and try them out. As a garden talking-point and a sure-fire attention-getter, we’d venture to say that Allium 'Hair' is an unbeatable choice!

Plant profile
Plant calendar
Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, two to three times their own height deep. A slightly flattened side is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
Space small bulbs around 5cm apart. Larger bulbs need more room, generally around twice their own width apart, so their foliage and flowers can develop freely.
Water after planting if the soil is dry, then only when needed. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally. Decorative seedheads can remain in place.
