A summer full of colour, flowers and foliage

Summer bulbs & plants
A summer garden begins well before the first flower opens. Summer bulbs and summer-flowering perennials are planted through spring so they can establish as the soil warms, then take their place from early summer onwards. Dahlias build into generous flowering plants, gladioli send up tall spikes, lilies rise through borders and begonias, cannas and other tender favourites bring sustained colour and foliage to pots and planting schemes. Together, summer-blooming varieties give you the freedom to shape the next season from the ground up.
Our range brings together summer-flowering bulbs and plants chosen for different roles in the garden. Some summer varieties bring height to the back of a border, others settle neatly into containers or produce stems worth cutting for the house. Sun-loving types can fill warmer positions, while begonias and selected foliage plants make useful choices where light is softer. Planting several varieties with different flowering times helps the summer display build gradually, rather than reaching its peak all at once.
In the UK, timing matters. Many summer bulbs can be planted outside in spring once conditions are suitable, while tender types such as dahlias, begonias and cannas can be started under cover to gain time before the last frosts have passed. Some hardy summer plants can remain in the ground from year to year, while more tender bulbs and tubers may need lifting or winter protection. Plan by position, height and flowering period, then allow the season to unfold. What begins as a box of dormant roots and bulbs in spring can become the main body of the garden by midsummer.
