The Lilium Martagon hybrids produce extremely quirky little blooms, hanging downwards like so many unusual pieces of headgear – so much so that the lilies have earned the name of Turk’s Cap Lilies. Up to 40 or 50 flowers hang from a single thin stem, dipping their faces and sending their recurved petals upwards to almost curl against the flower’s tubular base. Colours include pink, red, yellow and white, with combinations of these forming the base for speckled petals. Martagon Lilies like shady areas of the garden, mulch to protect their roots during hot summers and they like to be left alone and undisturbed once planted.
