Description

Near-black foliage provides the perfect foil for brightest scarlet, double blooms all summer long. Begonia maxima 'Switzerland' is prized for this super-stylish colour combo, and with Farmer Gracy’s begonia tubers and judicious watering, you’re assured of success. You will want to give your Switzerland begonias a prominent spot, and they make the ideal summer patio plant. Think cherries and chocolate and you’re nearly there. And what could be more Swiss than that? Try it once and discover why this variety is famous around the world. We’re betting you’ll be looking forward to re-flowering your corms next year!

Despite the relatively low plant (about 30 cm or 1 foot), the slightly corrugated flowers of Begonia maxima 'Switzerland' are plentiful and relatively large, measuring up to 15 cm (6 inch) in width, they will make a very colourful display.

Useful information

    • Begonia 'Switzerland' tubers are tender and require protection from frost. For best results, start them off in temporary pots in a greenhouse in March or April to give them a head start. They can then be transplanted outside in May.

    • Begonia tubers can also be planted directly outside into borders or containers in May.

    • When planting in containers, multipurpose compost is the ideal choice of growing medium.

    • Plant the Begonia 'Switzerland' tubers shallowly with the dipped side facing upwards—the top of the tuber should be around 1-2cm below the soil surface.

    • Space the tubers around 15-20cm apart from each other in a container display, or 20-30cm apart in borders.

    • Water-in thoroughly after planting and water regularly while in full growth. Don't allow them to sit in wet soil while still dormant.

Begonias in 1 minute

Plant your Begonia tubers in well-composted soil with good drainage in a light but shady area, out of the direct sun. Don't overwater, but don't let them get completely dry. Originally from warm sub-tropical areas, tuberous begonias require winter storage in cold areas.
