Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Taco'
Tulip 'Taco' may be compact in stature, but it brings a confident splash of colour to the spring garden. Reaching just 20cm in height, this charming dwarf variety produces sturdy stems framed by broad, grey-green foliage that provides a handsome, understated backdrop. The flowers of Tulip clusiana 'Taco' are classic yet lively, each petal a rich red brushed with a neat yellow edge, as though carefully outlined. It is a combination that feels both cheerful and composed, giving Tulip 'Taco' an easy versatility in a range of planting styles.
As the blooms open further, Tulip 'Taco' reveals a warm yellow interior that glows softly in the spring light, adding another layer of interest to its display. Flowering in mid spring, Tulip clusiana 'Taco' is perfectly suited to containers, gravel gardens, or the front of a sunny border where its neat proportions can be appreciated up close. Planted in small groups, Tulip 'Taco' creates a bright, harmonious effect without ever feeling overpowering. It is an unfussy yet characterful choice, offering reliable colour and a pleasingly balanced form year after year.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
