Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Showwinner'
This award winning tulip was granted the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993. Tulip 'Showwinner' is one of the most striking Kaufmanniana Tulip cultivars. The blooms have fiery bright scarlet petals which open up wide to reveal a golden heart. Will you applaud your showwinner? It certainly deserves your accolades. 'Showwinner' tulips create gorgeous harmonies with other bulbs such as crocuses. They also naturalize quite well for some gardeners, settling in to bloom year after year if you choose a favourable location. Although the flowers steal the show, the wavy-edged foliage is very attractive – admittedly, you’ll only notice that before the blooms upstage the leaves.
Combine Tulip Showwinner with Crocuses for an early Spring colouring. On the images you can see Tulip Showwinner combined with Crocus 'Pickwick', Crocus 'Flower Record', and Crocus 'Jeanne d'Arc'. We have tested Tulip 'Showwinner' with Tulip 'Stresa' for several years now; They form an excellent combination, guaranteed to bloom at the same time.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
