Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Sanne'
Tulip 'Sanne' is one of those rare tulips that seems to reinvent itself as the days pass, offering a softly shifting palette that feels almost painterly. Each bloom of Tulip 'Sanne' opens in gentle pale apricot, delicately brushed with pink, before evolving through tones of blush, cream, soft white and warm salmon. It’s a quietly mesmerising performance, never brash, always refined. Tulip 'Sanne' carries large, shapely flowers in April and May, held confidently on sturdy stems reaching up to 45cm, making it a reliable choice for both borders and cutting gardens.
What truly sets Tulip 'Sanne' apart, however, is its fragrance—something of a rarity in tulips, and all the more delightful for it. On a still spring morning, the scent is unexpectedly rich and inviting, adding another dimension to its visual charm. Tulip 'Sanne' has been recognised with the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a testament to its garden performance and enduring appeal. Whether planted in drifts or woven among perennials, Tulip 'Sanne' brings a gentle sophistication that feels both effortless and quietly luxurious.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
