Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Palmyra'
Richly layered and wonderfully evocative, Tulip 'Palmyra' brings a sense of depth and drama to mid-spring planting. Its full double blooms open into generous, bowl-shaped flowers, each one a tapestry of deep crimson, warm brown and inky purple tones that verge on near-black. In brighter light, Tulip 'Palmyra' reveals a slightly redder cast, adding yet another dimension to its already complex colouring. There is a luxurious weight to each bloom of Tulip 'Palmyra', the petals folding and unfurling with a soft, almost velvety texture. Set against pale green, lance-shaped foliage, the flowers appear all the more intense, creating a striking and memorable display.
Flowering at around 40cm in height, Tulip 'Palmyra' sits comfortably within borders or containers, where its moody palette can be used to anchor softer spring tones. Planted in groups, Tulip 'Palmyra' creates a richly coloured scene that pairs beautifully with blush pinks, dusky mauves or even fresh greens for contrast. Its sturdy stems hold the substantial blooms well, making it equally suited for cutting, where Tulip 'Palmyra' lends a dramatic, almost painterly quality to arrangements. For those who favour depth, texture and a touch of the unexpected, Tulip 'Palmyra' offers a quietly opulent addition to the spring garden.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
