Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Outbreak'
If you’re looking for a thrilling outbreak of vibrant colour on a strong and reliable tulip, then you can’t go wrong with Tulip 'Outbreak'. Boasting a beautiful, classic cup-shaped bloom, 'Outbreak' is a tulip that demands to be noticed, with its intense yellow petals edged with just the right proportion of post-box red. Sometimes an injection of primary colours is just the thing the lift one’s mood as spring gets underway!
Belonging to the reliable and trusted Triumph group of tulips, Tulip 'Outbreak' will flower in mid spring on very sturdy stems that withstand the worst of what the weather might throw at them. Its relatively short stature, up to 40cm in height, makes Tulip 'Outbreak' perfect for creating big impact at the front of beds and borders, alongside paths, or in pots and containers. Triumph tulips are also among the best for forcing, enabling you to bring them into flower indoors earlier in the year, and make excellent, sturdy and long-lasting cut flowers too.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
