The chic fluted flowers of botanical Tulip clusiana var. chrysantha open gradually to give a long display, and once fully open they form a stunning star-like appearance from above. This early-flowering beauty is dainty and petite, making it the perfect choice for growing in pots, rockeries or narrow borders, and also looks a treat in a gravel garden.
This simple and natural perennial tulip is worth its weight in gold in the garden, not only putting on a spectacular display during spring, but often repeating year after year. Sitting on short but slender stalks, each bloom emerges with reddish outer petals, which then gradually open to reveal a dazzling display of golden-yellow inner petals, each reflexed to create the much-loved flouncy flute shape.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
