Get your tulip fix even in small spaces with Tulip 'Calgary Red'! It’s all the tulip but with less of the stem, so if you’re planting in a small pot or an exposed area, this stocky Triumph tulip is the answer. Large, bright red blooms appear in early April and, due to their strong, thick petals and intense colour, they offer high-impact colour which lasts for weeks. Low-level tulips like Tulip 'Calgary Red' are also a useful ‘ingredient’ in a bulb lasagne—you can layer varieties with different heights to create a mini planting scheme all in one pot!
If you’re looking for some contrasting tulips to match, try combining Tulip 'Calgary Red' with Tulip 'Calgary' and Tulip 'Calgary Flames'—all of which have big blooms on stout stems. Other low growing plants which accompany Tulip 'Calgary Red' harmoniously include Anemone blanda, Scilla siberica, Chionodoxa and Muscari. Plant these reliable tulips in bold groups or swathes in a border to create a shock of colour, or plant mini groups in various little pockets around the garden.
