Tulip

'Ballerina'

Not every ballerina wears pale pink. Tulip 'Ballerina' arrives dressed in tangerine orange, with a flicker of scarlet running through each slender petal. The comparison with a dancer is well earned: elegant, poised and just theatrical enough to steal the scene. As its lily-flowered blooms open in late spring, their pointed tips curve gracefully outwards, giving each flower a wonderfully expressive silhouette. And then comes the unexpected encore: a delicious, citrus-like perfume, particularly noticeable on warm, sunny days. Rising to around 55–60cm above blue-green foliage, Tulip 'Ballerina' brings both height and movement to borders. With an RHS Award of Garden Merit to its name, this is a performance that has earned its applause.

Give Tulip 'Ballerina' a sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally with some shelter from strong winds to protect its fine, upright stems. Plant the bulbs in autumn and arrange them in generous groups for the most convincing display. Against deep purple tulips or a soft haze of blue forget-me-nots, the fiery colours of Tulip 'Ballerina' look especially vivid. It's equally captivating in large containers, where the scent can be appreciated near a path or seating area. Cut a few for a vase, too: those elongated flowers have all the elegance of a carefully composed bouquet, without requiring much arranging. One Tulip 'Ballerina' is lovely; a whole company is something else entirely.
