Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.
'Avant Garde'
Softly luminous and delightfully full, Tulip 'Avant Garde' brings an air of gentle opulence to the early spring garden. Its double blooms are richly layered, opening like small peonies in shades of creamy lemon-yellow, each flower of Tulip 'Avant Garde' glowing more intensely at the centre. There is a subtle warmth to its colouring, never brash, always refined, allowing Tulip 'Avant Garde' to sit beautifully within a wide range of planting schemes. Flowering early in the season, it offers a welcome lift after winter, its softly rounded form adding both volume and texture. With its poised habit and quietly radiant tones, Tulip 'Avant Garde' feels effortlessly elegant, whether viewed up close or woven through a border.
Supported by sturdy stems, Tulip 'Avant Garde' stands reliably at around 35 to 40 cm, making it an excellent choice for both borders and containers. Planted in generous groups, Tulip 'Avant Garde' creates a gentle wash of light, pairing especially well with fresh greens, whites or soft blues. A faint, pleasing fragrance adds another layer of enjoyment, particularly when positioned near a pathway or seating area. As a cut flower, Tulip 'Avant Garde' brings its creamy glow indoors, the blooms gradually opening to reveal their full, ruffled character. For an early display that combines substance with softness, Tulip 'Avant Garde' is a quietly luxurious choice.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
