Description
Compact, graceful and quietly distinctive, Sesleria heufleriana—commonly called Balkan blue grass—is a delightful ornamental that brings texture and movement to the garden year-round. This densely tufted, evergreen grass forms neat clumps to around 70cm high, with slender leaves that emerge bright green in spring before maturing to a cool blue-green with silvery undersides as the season unfolds. Early in spring, fine upright stems rise above the foliage, topped with dark purple spikelets that fade to soft white as they open, creating a subtle yet elegant contrast against the shifting tones of the leaves.
Wonderfully easy to grow, Sesleria heufleriana thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, where its colour and form can truly shine. Its tidy habit makes it ideal for edging borders, softening pathways, or adding structure to gravel gardens and containers. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, it keeps its poise throughout the year, even in exposed sites. Whether used en masse for a serene, naturalistic effect or as a delicate accent among perennials, Sesleria heufleriana lends lasting texture and a whisper of the wild Balkan hills to any planting scheme.

Useful information
-
Soak the Sesleria heufleriana roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Balkan blue grass" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
