Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Golden Tower'
yellow elder
Sambucus 'Golden Tower' brings a touch of elegance—and a good dose of sunshine—to any garden. This compact yellow elder doesn’t sprawl like its cousins but grows in a neat, upright column, making it a fine choice for tighter spaces or formal borders. Its finely divided, pinnate leaves emerge in spring as a bright, almost lemony yellow, gradually deepening through the season before taking on rich autumn tones. Then, as if golden foliage weren’t enough, Sambucus 'Golden Tower' tops the display with frothy panicles of tiny, fragrant white flowers in early summer, drawing in bees and butterflies for good measure.
Come late summer, the show continues with clusters of glossy black berries that shimmer against the fading gold leaves—a lovely contrast and a feast for the birds. Sambucus 'Golden Tower' is a true multitasker, offering colour, structure and wildlife appeal without ever demanding much fuss. It’s equally at home in a mixed border, as a vertical accent in smaller gardens, or even in a large container. Give it sun and well-drained soil, and it will quietly deliver season after season of interest. Stylish yet easy-going, Sambucus 'Golden Tower' proves that good things really do come in compact, golden packages.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
