Description
With a name that suggests velvet curtains and a little Parisian drama, Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' brings rich, romantic colour to sunny borders without ever tipping into fussiness. This upright, clump-forming perennial reaches around 60cm in height, making it tall enough to give shape and movement, yet compact enough for mixed planting schemes and generous containers. Aromatic green foliage forms a fresh, leafy base, while slender flower spikes rise above it from summer into autumn. Dark, rosy-pink buds open into large violet-pink flowers, giving Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' a layered, painterly quality that shifts beautifully with the light.
Plant Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' where it can bask in full sun and well-drained soil, and it will reward you with months of colour and an easy, graceful habit. As a sage, its aromatic leaves bring that lovely Mediterranean character, while the nectar-rich blooms are quick to attract bees and other pollinators. Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' is superb among ornamental grasses, dusky dahlias and silver foliage, where its violet-pink flowers add warmth without shouting. Regular deadheading will keep the display coming, although Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' is pleasingly low-maintenance once settled. Elegant, expressive and just theatrical enough, Salvia × sylvestris 'Moulin Rouge' makes summer borders feel beautifully composed.

Useful information
-
Soak your Salvia 'Moulin Rouge' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Sage" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
