Description
Salvias, or forms of flowering sage, have never been more popular, and the Salvia 'Feathers' range, one of the newer strains, has broken boundaries. All plants in the range have unique, deeply incised, scented foliage that gives plants a light elegance. Salvia 'Feathers Flamingo' is stunning. It’s a compact, bushy, hardy border perennial with mid-green deeply cut leaves. But it’s the slender spikes of small, soft pink-lipped flowers that make us stare in wonder. Each bloom of Salvia 'Feathers Flamingo' has a co-ordinating dark lavender-pink bract, which adds to the charm. Flowers are carried throughout summer and towards mid- to late autumn.
There are just so many good reasons to grow Salvia 'Feathers Flamingo'—let’s begin with the incredibly long flowering time. This beauty starts flowering from as early as May and continues well into mid-summer. Give it a quick snip at that point and usually it’ll flower again in autumn. It’s extra prolific with a bushy and compact habit, the overall effect is a dense display of pretty dusky pink blooms on sturdy upright stems. The foliage is fragrant, which is a nice added bonus, and also it’s a pollinator magnet – bees and butterflies simply adore it.
If that’s not enough reasons to grow Salvia 'Feathers Flamingo', there are more. It’s low maintenance and incredibly resilient. Typically drought and heat tolerant during summer once its settled in, and also fully hardy so you don’t have to worry about it during winter either. This ornamental sage likes a sunny spot and fits in well with cottage-style planting schemes, it’s perfect for pots or borders. Try combining this with other sun-loving perennials such as Geranium 'Rozanne' or Stachys 'Humello'.
A mature plant will reach a height and spread of around 50cm, making Salvia 'Feathers Flamingo' perfect for the front of a border,or as a solo container plant, or in a mixed planting in a patio pot. A prolifically flowering Salvia, 'Feathers Flamingo' looks superb paired with forms of catmint (Nepeta) and cotton lavender (Santolina), especially if interplanted with ornamental onions (Allium).
