Description
Physocarpus 'Diable d’Or' is as dramatic as its name suggests, but with just the right amount of refinement. This upright, deciduous shrub makes a bold statement with its fiery red-bronze young foliage, which gradually deepens into a rich, sultry purple as the season progresses. In early summer, delicate clusters of creamy-white flowers appear, lighting up the dark foliage like little sparks. As the blooms of Physocarpus 'Diable d’Or' fade, they’re replaced by small, glossy red seed capsules that carry the display well into autumn—a striking contrast against those deeply toned leaves.
For all its flair, Physocarpus 'Diable d’Or' is impressively easy-going. It thrives in full sun, where its colouring is at its most intense, but is equally content in partial shade. Tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions, this ninebark is a stalwart performer that keeps the garden interesting long after other shrubs have given up for the season. Its tidy, upright habit makes it ideal for borders, informal hedging, or as a standalone feature where it can show off its natural poise. Physocarpus 'Diable d’Or' is the kind of plant that adds structure and colour without demanding attention—a little bit devilish perhaps, but always impeccably behaved.

Useful information
-
Soak the Physocarpus 'Diable d'Or' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Ninebark" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
