Description
Look no further for a unique long-flowering perennial to add to your border displays, Phlox 'Orchid Yellow' is high on the list of interesting garden marvels and it’s easy to see why. This truly striking phlox stands out for its fragrant, neon-pink blooms, each with a chartreuse green to buttercream picotee edge. Adding further intrigue are near-black narrow sepals which enclose unopened buds, these create a dark hazy backdrop within the clustered flowerhead which goes even further to help the colour of blooms pop. Not only does this hardy perennial Phlox 'Orchid Yellow' look the part in cottage-garden borders through most of summer, and also attract pollinators, but its stems topped with a froth of bubbly blooms look incredible in a cut flower arrangement.
Start bare root Phlox in temporary pots and grow them on for a few months before planting out, it helps them to establish and grow a strong root system to get them off to a good start. When you plant out Phlox 'Orchid Yellow', choose a spot which is in full sun or very light shade with free-draining but reliably moist soil. Once it’s settled in, it’s easy to care for and asks very little from you in return for the long lasting show of gorgeous flowers it displays each year. Try combining this with Echinacea 'Green Twister', dahlias, ornamental grasses or Phlox 'Blind Lion' for a high-impact and harmonious scheme. Growing to around 70cm tall, Phlox paniculata 'Orchid Yellow' will need a spot towards the middle or back of a border where it can gradually spread as it established over time.
