Commonly named fountain grass, probably for its habit of swishing its long, silvery plumes of fluffy flowers, it introduces a soft texture and billowing movement to your garden which really brings your planting scheme to life. This half-hardy perennial erupts a frothy display of tail-shaped flowers every summer, and once it's settled in you can look forward to seeing it establish over time into a chunky clump which provides months of interest and demands very little attention in return.

Best suited to mild or coastal areas—plant Pennisetum orientale 'Dance With Me' with other ornamental grasses to create a prairie look, or herbaceous perennials like Echinacea, Rudbeckia or Helenium to bring in some colour. This variety grows well in a sunny spot with sandy, free-draining soil. It's drought tolerant, therefore doesn’t mind being in a space which is typically very dry. Cut it back in autumn and new leaves and flowers will grow back the year after!
