Description
When this bright and popular oriental poppy bursts into life from May to July, it is certain to add interest to your garden displays. Papaver 'Marlene' is one of the most vibrant and exciting forms, with beautiful, large, ruffled purple-red flowers, each with a darker centre. And bees and butterflies and bees love them, too. This hardy perennial produces delightful, slightly hairy foliage, on stems 60-80cm" high. And fresh foliage will grow again in autumn to give the plant a new dimension!
The seed heads of Papaver orientale 'Marlene' can be dried for attractive indoor decoration. The plant is also rabbit, slug and deer resistant! It prefers moist, well-drained soil, and a position in full sun.

Soak your Papaver 'Marlene' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Oriental poppy" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
