Description
Set your borders ablaze with an inferno of colour! The striking Panicum 'Heiliger Hain' features deep green foliage that turns to burgundy and incandescent red from late summer, through bright yellow and orange, for a striking flame-like effect—making it a must-have plant for autumn interest. The action isn't just confined to the end of the season however—bearing feathery panicles of tiny pinky-beige flowers from mid-late summer, it has plenty to admire earlier on too.
When planting this variety, choose a sunny spot with an open-structured growing medium, to ensure excellent drainage. If your soil is heavy, adding some grit or sand will help to improve it. Panicum virgatum 'Heiliger Hain' is a deciduous perennial grass, so once the embers have died down in winter, you can remove dead foliage and flowered stems to tidy up the display.

Useful information
-
Soak the Panicum 'Heiliger Hain' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Switch grass" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
