Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Old Rose Dandy'
peony
Paeonia 'Old Rose Dandy' is a peony with an unusually artistic sense of colour, opening its lightly scented flowers in dusky pink with raspberry-pink flames at the base. As the blooms mature, they soften to pale pink and peachy yellow, creating a changing display that feels almost too clever for a plant, though we shall allow it. Semi-subtle yet full of character, Paeonia 'Old Rose Dandy' brings warmth, depth and a quietly vintage mood to late spring and early summer borders. Its strong stems hold the flowers with admirable poise, while deep green leaves provide the perfect polished backdrop for all that shifting colour.
Plant Paeonia 'Old Rose Dandy' in fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny or lightly shaded position where its nuanced tones can be properly admired. The dusky pinks and soft yellow fading combine beautifully with bronze foliage, apricot roses, violet salvias and airy grasses, giving Paeonia 'Old Rose Dandy' a natural place in romantic or more contemporary planting schemes. Its lightly fragrant blooms are also excellent for cutting, adding painterly charm to vases as the colours gently evolve indoors. Distinctive, long-lived and supported by pleasingly sturdy stems, Paeonia 'Old Rose Dandy' is a rewarding peony for gardeners who enjoy elegance with a little intrigue.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
