Description

Paeonia 'Moon of Nippon' is an utterly unique and eye-catchingly beautiful perennial peony. A single, Japanese-style cultivar, it has delicate pure white, saucer-shaped outer petals, with a contrasting pale-yellow centre to the flower. This billowing centre is made up of dozens of small, primrose yellow petals (correctly known as petaloids). To many people, the bloom of Paeonia 'Moon of Nippon' is highly reminiscent of a sunny-side up egg, with a pale yolk! It’s a real show-stopper.

Sturdy, upright stems rise above the divided, dark green leaves, to support the massive blooms, with no need for staking. This also means that Paeonia lactiflora 'Moon of Nippon' is a perfect variety for cut flowers.

Flowers come towards the end of the peony-flowering season, making this plant a great addition for extending the season of colour. Oh, and one last thing: Paeonia 'Moon of Nippon' is such a good garden plant that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Peonies in 1 minute

Peonies like deep, fertile and moist soil with good drainage, and your peony bare roots should be planted in sunny locations where they are sheltered from the wind. The glossy green foliage of Paeonia lasts all summer long, changing to a purplish gold colour in autumn.
