Here’s some plant candy to sweeten up your style—it goes by the name of Oxalis versicolor, more commonly known as candy cane sorrel. This late summer treat flowers with candy-twist blooms so enchanting you could easily find them in a fairy tale. Forming a soft cushion of greenery, they come to life from late summer through to early winter with their topping of sweetie-shop flowers which unravel during the day, at which point they resemble little red and white spiralled lollipops!
One for a mild, coastal area, rockery or gravel garden, Oxalis versicolor loves to be in a free-draining, sandy or gritty soil and can tolerate temperatures down to around -5C. Oxalis is very low maintenance and doesn’t require much fuss. Given mild conditions, they’ll come back for a repeat show every year!
