Description

Would you like to do something a little different in the garden this year? Then perhaps its time you tried Nectaroscordum siculum (or Allium bulgaricum). Is that hard to pronounce? Feel free to call it by its rather apt common name Mediterranean bells or by its rather cryptic one: Sicilian honey garlic. As Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” And yes, Nectaroscordum siculum does smell sweet, but what you’ll notice most is the tall flower spikes topped by a cluster of intricate cream and purple bells. Nectaroscordum siculum is related to alliums, but is more informal in its structure, making for an unusual choice that’s sure to have people asking what on earth you’ve planted in your garden. So start practicing saying it now “Nectaroscordum siculum”, because you’ll have to tell all the people who’ll want to know!

In Bulgaria, sicilian honey garlic is used as an edible ingredient: the leaves of the wild Nectaroscordum plant—locally known as samardala—turn up in spice mixes and salts.
