Description
Bring the holiday home with an exotic banana palm, Musa 'Ever Red' and enjoy its bold, leafy structure and lushness in your own garden! With its impressive, paddle like, lush-green leaves, striped randomly with dark-burgundy which last through the season until the first frosts, it is a truly captivating plant with a generously long season of interest which will be a real talking point in the garden. With slightly thicker foliage than other banana palms, this red banana plant is more resilient to summer winds and copes better with winter cold, making it one of the hardiest varieties around.
Classed as half hardy, Musa 'Ever Red' can survive temperatures down to around -5°C, making this a suitable choice for areas with mild winters. Alternatively, you can grow it in a large pot and move it into a more sheltered location for winter. Not at all surprisingly, this impressive variety was a finalist in the Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year in 2024 and is bound to prove its winning credentials in your garden too. This Musa holds its red colour well throughout the season and once mature will eventually reach a height of approximately 3-4m, developing a woody stem, once established. Plant Musa sikkimensis 'Ever Red' alongside flamboyant cannas, vibrant dahlias and swathes of heleniums and rudbeckias to create a colourful, tropical theme for it to feel right at home in.
Often called a banana tree, the banana plant is actually a herb. It shares distant relations with ginger, featuring a succulent stem instead of a woody trunk.

Soak your Musa 'Ever Red' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Red banana plant" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
