Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.

Lythrum
'Swirl'
purple loosestrife
There is something wonderfully assured about Lythrum 'Swirl'. Tall yet graceful, it rises from a sturdy clump of slender green foliage with an effortless sense of poise, sending up strong branching stems that can reach around a metre in height. As summer gathers pace, Lythrum 'Swirl' begins its long and generous display, producing elegant spires studded with starry flowers in a rich rosy-purple. The colour has depth without heaviness—vivid enough to catch the eye, yet soft enough to blend naturally among ornamental grasses, airy perennials, and relaxed cottage borders. Lythrum 'Swirl' has a natural rhythm in the garden, the upright stems weaving vertical interest through planting schemes without ever feeling stiff or formal.
Gardeners who appreciate plants that quietly carry a border through the height of summer will find Lythrum 'Swirl' particularly rewarding. The flowers continue over many weeks, drawing pollinators while the finely shaped foliage forms a pleasing green backdrop. Whether planted beside water, where its relatives often thrive, or nestled within a sunny perennial border, Lythrum 'Swirl' settles in happily and returns each year with dependable vigour. As the spikes sway lightly in warm breezes, Lythrum 'Swirl' brings a relaxed vertical accent that feels both naturalistic and quietly dramatic—exactly the sort of plant that makes a planting scheme feel complete.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
