Description
There’s nothing like a dash of intense red to create a striking focal point and contrast among neighbouring plants. Adding some delicious chocolatey-bronze foliage makes the fabulous combination you’ll find in Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet'. This is a plant that wants to be noticed, and it will be! There’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the dramatic upright flower spikes, with unfurling intense scarlet blooms offset by deep purple stems and matching buds. Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet' has got an exceptionally long flowering period for a lobelia, kicking off in mid summer and keeping up the show all the way through to autumn, giving several weeks of vibrant colour – easy, long-lasting interest… perfect!
This hardy perennial Lobelia × speciosa 'Fan Scarlet' is handy for damper parts of the garden. It positively thrives in heavy, water-retentive soils or in rainy parts of the country, but it’s also quite happy in average garden soils that don’t dry out too much (a mulch will help keep to lock in moisture). A great subject for pondside planting or bog gardens in both sun or partial shade, Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet' will immediately energise the area with its vibrant colours, returning every year for another great show. Its compact size, up to 50cm tall, and bushy habit make it a useful for containers too. And while it flaunts exotic good looks, it is surprisingly hardy, able to take below freezing temperatures to around -10°C.

Useful information
-
Soak your Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
