Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'The Rocket'
leopard plant
Reaching skywards with remarkable elegance, Ligularia 'The Rocket' brings a wonderful sense of height and drama to the summer garden. Its tall, slender flower spikes are covered in hundreds of small, golden-yellow daisies, creating glowing columns of colour above a generous mound of foliage. The flowers open along striking, almost black stems, providing a beautiful contrast that makes their sunny colouring appear even more vibrant. Below, large, heart-shaped leaves with boldly serrated edges form a lush, architectural base, bringing texture and interest long before the first flowers appear. Reaching up to 1.8m tall, Ligularia 'The Rocket' is particularly effective planted among ferns, hostas and ornamental grasses, where its upright flower spikes create an exciting contrast with softer, rounded foliage.
For a plant with such a commanding presence, Ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket' has surprisingly simple requirements, provided its roots never become too dry. This hardy perennial thrives in fertile, consistently moist soil, making it an excellent choice for waterside planting, damp borders and sheltered areas of the garden. Choose a position in partial shade or gentle sun, avoiding strong midday heat where possible. During July and August, Ligularia 'The Rocket' produces its magnificent golden flower spikes, attracting visiting bees and other pollinators. The substantial foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, providing a handsome backdrop for neighbouring plants. Whether used as a striking specimen or planted in small groups for greater impact, Ligularia 'The Rocket' brings height, structure and a wonderfully natural sense of abundance to the summer border.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
