As bohemian and unique as the festival it takes its name from, Hyacinth 'Woodstock' flaunts velvety plum-coloured blooms that are sure to surprise traditionalists who see hyacinths as being white, pink or blue. “Ground Control to Major Tom. Plant your hyacinths, and nothing can go wrong”. Although that’s taking liberties, it’s nothing but the truth. Despite their absolutely stunning appearance, hyacinths are incredibly easy to grow.
Don’t forget that you get a double whammy with both eye-candy and a scent that’s as sweet as your flowers look. Grow them in containers, plant them as an edging to your beds or dot them along garden pathways so that the spring scent follows you throughout your garden.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Wearing gloves, plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 10–15cm deep and around 10cm apart. Their naturally purplish outer skin is perfectly normal.
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Border-grown hyacinths rarely need further watering during winter, but keep containers lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. The bulbs can remain planted, although flowering may become less dense over time.
