This is a rare deep blue, and in the double form it is even more impactful. 'Manhattan's clusters of flowers are layered like overlapping stars, and on close inspection you’ll notice the blue darkens and intensifies at the centre of the petals, and is lighter shade of lilac blue towards the edges, giving these blooms a beautiful luminosity.
Rare, unusual and still relatively unknown beyond specialist circles, Hyacinth 'Manhattan' has impressive credentials. Bred from the award-winning Hyacinth 'Dark Ocean' by growers in the Netherlands, we expect ‘Manhattan’ to be top of the wish-list for garden designers. It lends itself to creating wonderful contrasts with other intensely coloured blooms, perfect for a mood boost in early spring. Hyacinthus orientalis 'Manhattan' can be grown in containers, planted as edging to beds and borders, or as a beautiful scented lining to pathways. To enjoy both the sweet fragrance and good looks of 'Manhattan', cut some stems and pop them in a vase, where they will keep well, enveloping your house with perfume.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Wearing gloves, plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 10–15cm deep and around 10cm apart. Their naturally purplish outer skin is perfectly normal.
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Border-grown hyacinths rarely need further watering during winter, but keep containers lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. The bulbs can remain planted, although flowering may become less dense over time.
