Although the softer shades remain popular, there’s no beating the strong carmine-red of Hyacinth 'Jan Bos' – at least when it comes to visual impact. It’s also very unusual to see such a strong colour in hyacinths, and while the spikes of brightly coloured blooms provide a feast for the eyes, you’ll be able to enjoy them with your eyes closed – thanks to the delightful scent they exude.
Brighten up garden paths and edges or grow them in pots for an unbeatable display. Your Dutch bulbs are primed for success. Just add water! You can even grow them in water if you have a bulb glass.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Wearing gloves, plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 10–15cm deep and around 10cm apart. Their naturally purplish outer skin is perfectly normal.
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Border-grown hyacinths rarely need further watering during winter, but keep containers lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. The bulbs can remain planted, although flowering may become less dense over time.
