Plant hyacinth bulbs from September to December. If needed, store them somewhere cool and dry, away from mice, but plant before they begin to deteriorate.
Pure white blooms illuminate your garden and can be enjoyed at times of the day when other blooms don’t stand out. Imagine a moonlit garden with Hyacinth 'Carnegie' adding its sweet, fresh scent to the air as its blooms seem to shimmer in the night. By day, the effect is just as elegant. No wonder that so many have chosen the ‘white garden’. But why limit yourself? Combine white Carnegie hyacinths with blue or pink and allow each colour to enhance the other. Secret: growing hyacinths is extremely easy – just don’t tell your neighbours – or they’ll all start emulating you!

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Wearing gloves, plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 10–15cm deep and around 10cm apart. Their naturally purplish outer skin is perfectly normal.
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Border-grown hyacinths rarely need further watering during winter, but keep containers lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. The bulbs can remain planted, although flowering may become less dense over time.
