Description
Hosta 'First Blush' is a truly exciting Hosta, billed as the first red leaf variety. Okay, so the leaves are not bright pillar-box red, but this variety offers a fairly unique flushed bronze-to-red on its green leaves. This red colouring is most prominent in spring, fading to more of a rich green as the season progresses. The further North you are, or the colder the garden, the longer the red blush will be seen. These gorgeous, veined, heart-shaped leaves are held on dark red stems. Hosta 'First Blush' is a stunning, compact, mid-height variety, at 35-40cm tall, and is ideal for the front of the border, or patio pot. In early summer, it throws out spikes of fragrant, funnel-shaped, purple to lavender flowers.
One of the reddest plantain lilies available, Hosta 'First Blush' is sure to turn heads as it adorns the shady spaces in your garden. The best effect is created if you plant groups of three, five, or more of these plants together. In addition, it is great for planting in mixed patio containers.

Soak your Hosta 'First Blush' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Plantain lily" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
