Description
Hemerocallis 'String Bikini', which first came to the attention of gardeners in 2002, is what is known as a spider daylily. This is defined as a cultivar with blooms that have petals four times or more the length of their width. In other words, besides being very pretty, the flowers of daylily 'String Bikini' have an interesting star shape, with long and skinny petals. With this cultivar each bloom, which has a sight fragrance, is around 17cm across, and is held on stalks which can be 80cm high. Even better, it often sends out a second flush of bloom towards the end of the summer.
Hemerocallis 'String Bikini' has a unique colour combination, too, with each bloom having a golden yellow throat, blending in to greenish yellow petals with pink-purple tips and purple along some edges. With this colour combination, they will look like nothing else in your garden! Plants show their absolute beauty after 2-3 years, once they are fully developed and have put down a strong root system. Therefore, as Hemerocallis 'String Bikini' is a hardy perennial (which comes back year-after-year), you will be getting great value for your money. And a talking point with visitors, too.

Soak your Hemerocallis 'String Bikini' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Spider daylily" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
