Description
Ignite early summer with a blaze of brilliant red blooms, courtesy of Geum 'Firestarter'. May to June is a time of year when there can sometimes be a colour gap between the seasons, but geums or avens like this one will erupt into action at just the right moment to bridge that gap with an inferno of colour. Over time, Geum 'Firestarter' will grow into an impressive clump which produces more and more stems, topped with delicate blooms which waft like embers in the breeze.
Find a space towards the front or middle of a sunny border for Geum 'Firestarter'. Whilst it’s a good idea to give them a gentle start in temporary pots and grow on prior to planting out, in the long run it’s happiest in borders in soil which doesn’t completely dry out. You can create a contrast by pairing this hardy perennial with other perennials which flower around the same time, such as Aquilegia and Geranium.

Useful information
-
Soak your Geum 'Firestarter' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Avens" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
