Description

Dahlia 'Sweet Suzanne' is a new cultivar of pompon dahlia (or ball dahlia) with pastel-coloured flowers and you will rarely find it for sale. It has subtly-coloured flowers that are rounded, fully double, and with partly incurved petals. Its 9-10cm wide blooms are a soft peachy cream, with a stunning cream-yellow and soft green centre. This dahlia grows to a height of just 100cm or so, and is therefore ideal for the mid-way point in beds and borders, or even patio containers.

The flowers of Dahlia 'Sweet Suzanne' start to open in July, and continue coming until the first frosts of autumn. They grow on strong, straight stems, which makes this a good dahlia for growing as a long-lasting cut flower. The pastel shades of this dahlia look particularly fine next to tall, golden grasses, or strong, contrasting specimen plants, such as deep red cordylines or copper beech. You won’t easily find Dahlia 'Sweet Suzanne' anywhere else, and it will not disappoint you.

Useful information

    • Dahlia 'Sweet Suzanne' is half hardy, which means that it should be kept frost free over winter and during spring.

    • For best results, start your dahlia tubers in temporary pots in a
greenhouse in March or April to grow on to transplant outside later in the season—this will give them a head start.

    • Alternatively, you can plant the Dahlia 'Sweet Suzanne' tubers directly outside in May.

    • Plant with the stump of last year's stem facing upwards. The tuber should be fully submerged but with the stump just below the soil surface.

    • Plant one tuber per 8-10" pot if growing on during spring. When
planting outside, space the tubers around 30-50cm apart from each other. Compact varieties don’t need so much space.

    • Water-in thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly once in full growth, but only when the soil appears to be nearly dry.

Dahlias in 60 seconds

Dahlias like full sun and a free-draining soil, and should be lifted and stored in winter, or at least protected with peat or straw. Dahlia flowers can range from 5 to 25cm in diameter and those magnificent larger-flowering dahlias might appreciate a little extra support with canes!
