Dahlias are half hardy, so keep them protected from frost. Pot tubers individually between February and April and grow them on in a greenhouse or bright indoor position. Alternatively, start them outside in May, once the risk of frost has passed.

Dahlia
'Kennemerland'
Named after one of the most beautiful national parks in Holland, the Dahlia 'Kennemerland' has to do a lot to live up to its namesake which offers lagoons, dunes and woods as attractions to visitors. This one metre plant, when it’s covered in bright and cheerful cactus-style flowers, certainly does its best. And it certainly is going to attract a lot of attention with its bursts of colour, either in borders or in vases. The long petals have the typical cactus dahlia tubular spikes as a background to the tight centre ball of petals. The cheery yellow Dahlia 'Kennemerland' will stand out wonderfully against the green foliage of this dahlia.
The unique spiky petals of Dahlia 'Kennemerland' create a textured, almost architectural effect that brings drama and dimension to any planting scheme. Perfect for pollinator-friendly gardens, these flowers attract bees and butterflies, making your outdoor space a lively haven. Their long stems also make them ideal for cut flower arrangements, bringing their cheerful charm indoors.
Thriving in sunny spots with well-drained soil, Dahlia 'Kennemerland' is as easy to grow as it is dazzling. Whether you're designing a cottage garden, a contemporary border, or simply looking to add a splash of yellow to your landscape, this variety won’t disappoint. For gardeners seeking a bold statement flower that combines colour, form, and versatility, Dahlia 'Kennemerland' is the perfect choice. With its impressive blooms and long flowering season, this dahlia will keep your garden glowing until the first frost. Don’t miss the chance to add this golden treasure to your collection!

For planting out later, use a snug-fitting 15–20cm pot filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. For a patio display, plant directly into a container at least 30cm wide and keep it somewhere bright and frost free until it can move outdoors.
Position the old stem facing upwards, with the tubers covered and the stem stump level with the compost. Tubers naturally vary in size and shape and may arrive without visible buds. Bent necks are usually fine if they remain firmly attached, so do not remove them.
Water after planting, then allow the compost to become almost dry before watering again while the tuber remains dormant. Once shoots and leaves are growing strongly, water more regularly, always allowing excess water to drain away.
Plant out after the last frost, once the plant is around 20–30cm tall and its roots hold the compost together. Space dahlias approximately 30–50cm apart in borders, allowing less room for compact varieties. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water regularly during active growth and deadhead or cut flowers often. Dahlias usually bloom from July or August until the first frost, although later-planted tubers may start in late August or September. In autumn, lift, clean and dry the tubers, then store them somewhere cool, dry, airy and frost free.
