It’s a ball of purple and lilac perfection, with each pristine petal suffused with white with darker, rich-lilac undersides. Not only is Dahlia 'Columbus' a long-flowering treasure to enjoy in the garden, even better news is that it grows more blooms to replace any you pick. The soft purple blooms of Dahlia 'Columbus' combine well with deep purple, white, pastel shades and the more brazen colours that dahlias can offer, such as magenta pink and coral orange. For a complete contrast in flower shape and tone, try pairing Dahlia 'Columbus' with 'Honka Black' for a two-tone display of light and dark. Pot up the tubers and grow them on for a few months before planting into borders for best results.
Columbus discovered America partly due to a flower. On 11th October 1492, while becalmed in the Sargasso Sea, a crew member found a rose branch in the water. This indication of nearby land motivated the sailors to persist on their voyage to the New World.
