Description
Crocus 'Harry Hay' is a cultivar of Crocus that you won’t see in many gardens. It’s new. It’s rare. And it’s gorgeous! Flowering in late winter and early spring, it produces lovely light lavender-purple flowers, but the petals are tipped with a deeper purple. Blooms are just 10-15cm high, making the bulbs ideal for the front of a border, or for a container, or even naturalised in grass.
Actually, Crocus 'Harry Hay' (named after a renowned English plantsman and gardener who died in 2010) is a cultivar of Crocus heuffelianus, a species that grows naturally in the mountain chains of eastern Europe. It is a tough, hardy, robust Crocus but, being new – it was only registered as recently as 2020 – it is still available only in limited numbers.
Plant bulbs of Crocus heuffelianus 'Harry Hay' just 8cm deep and 5cm apart, and in groups of three or five. It’s a stunner, and looks sufficiently different from the more run-of-the-mill crocuses to be a great talking point.
The exquisite blossoms can range in hue, displaying various shades from the deepest purples to the most delicate lilacs, each one occasionally emitting a faint, sweet fragrance that adds an extra layer of sensory delight to your garden. Secure this rare find and get ready to enjoy the subtle, yet undeniable elegance of Crocus heuffelianus 'Harry Hay'.
