'Lucifer'

montbretia

There’s no mistaking the fiery confidence of Crocosmia 'Lucifer', a red montbretia that fully lives up to its dramatic name. From midsummer, tall, arching stems ignite with vivid red blooms, each one flaring like a tiny matchhead against the fresh, upright foliage. Seen en masse, the flowers of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' create the effect of quick, flickering flames dancing above the border, bringing instant movement and a welcome touch of theatricality. This South African native has a remarkable ability to lift a planting scheme, whether threaded through grasses, paired with deep purples or set ablaze against late-evening light. And despite its bold presence, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' remains wonderfully graceful, never overpowering its neighbours.

Plant Crocosmia 'Lucifer' in a sunny, free-draining spot and it will return reliably with ever-increasing enthusiasm. The flower spikes rise determinedly through the foliage, producing a generous succession of blazing blooms that pollinators find irresistible. Excellent as a cut flower, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' brings a striking, sculptural quality to arrangements, allowing you to bring a little of that garden spark indoors. Ideal for bold borders, wildlife-friendly gardens or simply adding a flash of colour in high summer, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is one of those varieties that turns ordinary moments into something quietly spectacular. It’s a plant that doesn’t just grow—it performs.

Crocosmia 'Lucifer' are hardy perennials and flower every year once established. After planting, they will flower from their second year onwards. In the first year they may produce foliage only.
