Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' is a refined classic with a name as grand as its blooms. This elegant climber offers single flowers up to 20cm across, each adorned with rounded, pale lavender-blue sepals that seem to glow in the sunlight. The deeply veined midribs, a shade paler than the rest of the petals, add a touch of delicate detail, while the contrasting white and chocolate-coloured stamens provide a striking focal point. Blooming abundantly from late spring through summer, Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' makes a graceful statement against trellises, pergolas, or garden walls, effortlessly blending charm and structure in one.
A robust and reliable variety, Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' thrives in well-drained soil with its roots kept cool and shaded. Whether trained up an archway or mingling with roses in a cottage garden setting, its soft lavender tones bring a touch of vintage elegance to any space. This variety is well-suited for containers, too, making it an excellent choice for patios or small gardens where vertical interest is needed. With a light prune after its first flush of flowers, Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' will reward you with an encore later in the season. For a climber with both poise and performance, look no further than Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley'.
Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondeley' is supplied as a pip with a well-developed root system, ready to thrive in your garden. You can see an example of a pip in the last image.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
