Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Etoile Nacrée'
syn. Clematis 'Sakurahime'
Clematis 'Etoile Nacrée' is a true shape-shifter in the garden, offering an ever-evolving display of colour as its large 16cm blooms mature. Opening in a luminous soft shade of lilac-pink, the flowers gradually fade to an elegant white, creating a multi-tonal effect that adds depth and interest throughout the season. Complemented by creamy-yellow stamens, Clematis 'Etoile Nacrée' brings a soft yet striking presence to walls, fences, and trellises. Its vigorous yet graceful growth makes it an excellent choice for adding height and movement to garden spaces without overwhelming its surroundings.
As with many of the best clematis varieties, Clematis 'Etoile Nacrée' is both rewarding and easy to grow. It flourishes in sun or partial shade and pairs beautifully with contrasting darker-flowered varieties or climbing roses. A reliable repeat bloomer, it ensures the garden remains lively from late spring to early autumn. Regular pruning will encourage fresh flowering and maintain its elegant habit, but even without fuss, Clematis 'Etoile Nacrée' performs beautifully. Whether grown as a standalone feature or mingled among other climbers, this variety—also known as Clematis 'Sakurahime'—is a true gem for any garden setting.
Clematis 'Etoile Nacrée' is supplied as a pip with a well-developed root system, ready to thrive in your garden. You can see an example of a pip in the last image.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
