Description

Cover bare soil with year-round lushness! Unfussy Bergenia cordifolia works as an excellent ground cover, bringing glossy greenery and lush texture to virtually any planting space. Also known as heartleaf Bergenia or elephant’s ears, the leaves are large, rounded and veined. The subtle sheen of the polished-looking foliage stands upright and catches and reflects sunlight beautifully, creating shining highlights wherever planted, be it in sun or shade. Every spring, look forward to a yearly illumination of bright pink, bee-friendly blooms!

With a year-round display of broad, rounded leaves, tinged with purple in winter, fully hardy Bergenia cordifolia will provide ongoing interest. Other than trimming back the spent flower stems and any untidy foliage in autumn, this garden stalwart needs little maintenance and can be relied upon to look great whatever the weather. The tough, leathery leaves of Bergenia cordifolia will stay strong in poor weather and this resilient plant will tolerate a range of situations, including exposed sites and poor soil. You’d be hard pressed to find a better choice for a robust but ravishing ground cover plant!

The leaves of Bergenia have a tangy and slightly bitter taste, which makes them suitable for culinary uses. They are used in salads, stir-fries, and some people make a refreshing tea from it.
