Tuberous begonias are tender and must remain frost free. For an earlier display, start the tubers in temporary pots in a greenhouse or bright, protected place from February to April, then move them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
'Wummi Marmorata'
Begonia 'Wummi Marmorata' isn’t one to shy away from attention—its large, double blooms look as though an artist has been at work with a brush dipped in red and white paint. Each petal is boldly marbled, giving every flower its own unique pattern and flair. This striking display rises above lush, deep green foliage, offering a vivid contrast that makes Begonia 'Wummi Marmorata' a real statement piece in containers, window boxes or shaded garden borders. It’s a variety that proves begonias can be as dramatic as any rose, yet far less demanding about it.
To get the best from Begonia 'Wummi Marmorata', plant it in rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably in part shade where the colours can really glow. With just a bit of regular deadheading and watering, it will reward you with an extended flowering season from early summer right through until the first chills of autumn. The marbled petals hold their colour beautifully, even after heavy rain, adding texture and intrigue long after other blooms have faded. Perfect for gardeners who enjoy a touch of theatre in their displays, Begonia 'Wummi Marmorata' delivers the kind of performance that’s impossible to overlook—bold, beautiful and just the right amount of flamboyant.

Grow begonias in light shade, protected from harsh winds. They need rich, reliably moist yet free-draining conditions. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost and make sure excess water can drain away easily.
Begonia tubers can be planted directly into patio containers or suitable borders in May, once frosts have passed. If planting into a border before shoots appear, mark the position so you know where to water and avoid disturbing the tuber.
Unlike pointed flower bulbs, begonia tubers are rounded with a shallow hollow on top. Plant with the hollow side facing upwards and the rounded side downwards, leaving the top of the tuber around 1–2cm below the soil or compost surface.
Space tubers approximately 15–20cm apart in container displays or 20–30cm apart in borders. This gives the developing plants enough room to form a generous, well-balanced display without becoming overcrowded.
Water after planting, then keep the compost only lightly moist while the tubers remain dormant. Once shoots appear and growth becomes established, water regularly without allowing the soil to become waterlogged or the containers to stand in water.
