Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.

Baptisia
'Dusty Purple'
false indigo
Baptisia 'Dusty Purple', commonly known as false indigo, is a showy addition to UK gardens, offering long, upright stems adorned with dusty purple pea-like flowers. Each spike bursts into bloom in late spring, creating a soft, smoky haze of colour that dances above the blue-green foliage. Baptisia 'Dusty Purple' isn’t just about flowers—it also provides architectural interest, with its stately, erect habit giving height and form to borders or cottage-style plantings. As the season progresses, the blossoms give way to decorative seed pods, adding texture and subtle autumnal interest that carries the plant’s charm beyond summer.
This hardy perennial thrives in sunny or partially shaded spots with well-drained soil, making Baptisia australis 'Dusty Purple' relatively low-maintenance once established. Its dusty purple flowers pair beautifully with soft whites, yellows, and silvery foliage, and it works equally well in informal borders, mixed perennial beds, or as a striking accent in larger containers. The pea-like flowers are a magnet for pollinators, so Baptisia 'Dusty Purple' isn’t just a treat for the eyes—it supports bees and butterflies too. With its combination of architectural grace, long-lasting blooms, and subtle smoky hues, Baptisia 'Dusty Purple' ensures UK gardens enjoy colour, structure, and a touch of perennial sophistication from late spring through to early summer.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
