Description
Astilbe arendsii 'Fanal' (or False Goat's Beard) will give shady areas in your garden a completely different texture and appearance with its half a metre (20 inch) long feathery blooms. These shoot up above a bed of foliage which starts off a deep mahogany red in spring before changing to green in summer. Astilbe arendsii 'Fanal's multiple florets which make up these feathery spikes are a deep, almost garnet red so they stand out strongly against their own and other foliage around them.
Gracy knows
"Astilbe arendsii 'Fanal' has fragrant flowers and foliage, and will serve you well as a container or border plant, while both its flower spikes and its foliage make welcome additions to cut flower arrangements. Even the dried flowers and seed heads have their own attraction."

Useful information
-

            - Soak the Astilbe 'Fanal' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
- Plant your "False goat's beard" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
- Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
- Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
